Through a diverse range of artwork and mediums, this exhibition delves into moments of waiting, working, mourning, and celebrating within liminal spaces—those in-between times filled with transition and uncertainty. Bitter/Sweet, based on a concept inspired by Reed van Brunschot’s artwork, is an intimate and evocative opportunity that invites reflection on life’s bittersweet nature, offering a poignant look at the memories and emotions that shape us.
[Brunschot’s] artworks take on displacement, daily life through the ‘transitional moment’, one in which a given situation suddenly and unexpectedly changes, be it in form or in sentiment. By building relationships between unexpected elements, through materialization, or correlation to the viewer, there is an emphasis on a dialog between the human, and the absurd object. Speaking in quotidian symbolism, her practice is based on themes of childhood, home life and all things ephemeral.
Expanding upon these themes, Bitter/Sweet celebrates and reflects on life’s milestones through the eyes and experiences of six artists. This includes a brand new oil painting series by acclaimed artist and illustrator David Shannon, a mausoleum photography series by photographer Octavia Sharp, mixed-media acrylic paintings by Daniela Garcia Hamilton, installations by Alison Chen, and a selected diptych by Yulia Gasio. Bitter/Sweet explores the duality of human experience, capturing the joys and sorrows of change and growth, and rediscovering the beauty of loss and the passage of time.
