LEE COX, our guest artist this April from Carmel, California, is an abstract painter whose work reflects a lifelong admiration for artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Paul Klee, and Alberto Burri. After a career in business, Lee began painting in retirement and has spent the past twenty years developing his practice. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Carmel, Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, and Denver, and he has presented several solo exhibitions.
Lee’s process: For Lee, painting is a restorative, memory-driven process that begins without a plan. Working intuitively in layered acrylic and pencil, he lets music guide a flow of recollections—people, places, and emotions—until one comes into focus. He then refines the piece over time, shaping it into a distilled expression of that moment, and titles the work to reflect its meaning, hoping it evokes memories in others.
