Erythros – ‘Red in Greek’, Utah Rhyolite Mobius Sculpture

22 in. x 11 in. x 9 in

Carving this Utah Rhyolite is difficult. It is formed in cavities of hot magma and is made up of quartz, plagioclase, and sanidine, with minor amounts of hornblende and biotite with a very high silica content. These Liesegang bands are very hard or very soft. Making them flow smoothly with a hammer and chisel is a real challenge. Creating a continuous edge Mobius strip like this is nearly impossible.
