Sculpture

My work is an expression of contemporary spirituality, the human condition, the emotions, and the transformative states we all experience. For although we may often feel so - none of us is alone.
The work is all in water based clay, i.e., mud, fired in a kiln, and then cast to Limited Edition Bronze.

Her evocative figurative sculptures are expressions of the emotions of our own lives, the human condition, and contemporary spirituality. The surface textures of each piece are a further expression of both life's energy and the emotional state at that "snapshot" moment. When we look at her sculptures, we see ourselves.

All of Joanne Levin's sculptures are made from the earth's clay, i.e., "mud". The originals are all fired in a kiln and then they are cast to Limited Edition bronzes. Because they are created from mud, they are all free formed and free standing. There are no internal armatures or support systems used in their creation. Rather piece by small piece of clay is added and added to form the figures.

She is both challenged by and challenges the wet heavy clay. Her figures are in motion, at angles, and in positions that are self-supporting and self sustaining, in spite of the constant contention between the weight of the clay and gravity. Each piece like each human being is created with inherent structural integrity and balance.

Joanne feels there is an absolute rightness that clay from the earth which carries its own symbolic meaning is the medium that composes her work. "Mud" the most elemental, enduring, transformative substance on this earth forms her sculptures, which are expressions of our own enduring, yet ever-changing, and fleeting states of being.

It is her sincere wish that her sculptures will increase the moments of hope, peace, or communion in your life, for although we may often feel so - none of us is alone.

Joanne Levin's work has been in numerous galleries and exhibitions and is in private collections.
