Photography Workshops & Tours
No matter if you’re a novice or a seasoned veteran behind the lens, Steve’s photography workshops will provide you with the type of instruction and photographic experiences you need to further your skills and become a better photographer. That’s true whether you use a digital camera, film camera, or even a smartphone. Not only will you come away with the knowledge and skills needed to take improved photos, but you’ll also leave having had the experience of a lifetime.
“Your workshop was the best I have been to and I have been to about 25 including Nikon, Ansel Adams, John Sexton, Al Belson, Reed Hoffmann, ...”
Dr. Melvin Cohen, Trabuco Canyon, Calif.
Steve has been leading workshops to Cuba longer than anyone. He has given lectures and presentations on photography at the University of Havana and the Union of Writers and Photographers (UNEAC) since his first visit in 2001. He has written articles and commentaries on Cuba that have been published on .edu websites referenced by universities.
"Thank you for guiding us and letting us explore and take advantage of what I may describe as a most creative road all through Habana Vieja with spontaneous detours. This was not just another ‘out of the box trip’ but a thoroughly creative and unique adventure.” Dr. Thomas Hartmann, Asheville, N. Car.
"This was one of the greatest adventures Roger and I have experienced. Exploring and learning about Havana was totally worth the trip. To add an overnight stay in the rural tobacco country was ‘over the top’ wonderful.” Doris Potter, Eugene, Ore.
In 2021 he will lead a tour to Southern France to photograph and explore the region. Limited to six photographers/companions, the tour will be photographing the legendary white Carmague horses and visiting sacred sites dedicated to the Black Virgin. The latter will be lead by author and Black Virgin expert, Donna Conrad.
Since 1989, Steve has written for Rangefinder and Photo Technique magazines and has been a contributing editor to Outdoor Photographer, Camera & Darkroom, and PhotoWork magazines. He has written columns, feature articles and interviews for Shutterbug, View Camera, Camera Arts, PIC, and PhotoPro magazines. He is the former editor of Photovision: Art and Technique and Focus Fine Art Photography magazines. He now writes for online publication with articles published in Phototrio, Photodoto, Professional Photographer magazine, and SLRLounge.
“Not only did you help my photography technically and aesthetically but most importantly you motivated me to want to pick up my camera once again after a long time.” Stavros Bashiardes, phD, Strovolos, Cyprus
Steve has written two books on digital, Digital Photo Assignments, and Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras: Getting the most from your MILC. Both are popular with photo educators. His three books on film, The Darkroom Cookbook, The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, and The Film Developing Cookbook are international bestsellers.
"Your book, Digital Photo Assignments, is just what I needed. There's nothing else like it out there. Thank you!" Alexandra Opie, Professor of Photography, Willamette University, Salem, Ore.
He is a member of the photography faculty at Oregon State University.
